Wondering how to decorate your home at Christmas? As one of the busiest times of the year, knowing where to start can feel a little overwhelming. Thankfully, we’re here to help you break down the job of decorating, so you can create a festive look you’re proud of. And, more importantly, have fun while you’re doing it!

It’s hard to know when to start decorating your home at Christmas. Some people like to get their decorations up on Advent which is the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Others prefer to leave it until a week or two before. And then there are those who get their decorations up the moment the clock strikes 12am on November 1st. Put simply, there are no set rules on when you should start decorating. As long as you have a plan in place, it’s entirely up to you.

1. Get Rid of Clutter

As much as you may dread it, your first step when decorating is to tidy up and clear some space. By making room for your decorations, it will make it easier for you to execute your Christmas vision.

Besides, it’s always easier to start with a blank canvas.

2. Choose Your Theme

If you want to give your home the wow factor at Christmas, start by choosing a theme for your decorations. For example, a winter wonderland with bright enchanting decorations, or a red and green colour scheme for a nostalgic feel. As well as keeping the theme consistent, you could even have a different theme in each room.

3. Pick Your Perfect Tree

This moves us nicely onto Christmas trees and how to pick the perfect one for your home. Firstly, it’s important to consider the size of your Christmas tree. After all, you don’t want to one that’s too big for the place you plan to put it. For advice on choosing a size, check out our Christmas tree buying guide.

Whether your style is a classic spruce, an enchanting snowy tree, or a tree with a winter forest look, we've got the perfect tree for you.

Looking to break tradition and go for something a little different? We also have a range of alternative trees, including pre-lit twig trees, mini trees, pencil trees and black and white trees. Let your style run wild this Christmas and add some edge to your decorating!

4. Make it Warm & Cosy

Creating a cosy ambience helps you to relax, unwind, and enjoy Christmas without the stress.

A great way to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere is by adding flameless candles to your décor. These can be styled anywhere you like. For example, on your windowsill, mantel, coffee table, and anywhere else you want to create a warm, cosy vibe.

5. Festive Greetings

Welcome your guests, the postman, or yourself to your home by hanging a beautiful wreath on your front door.

Use garlands to decorate railings, fences, and columns. And add ribbons and bows for extra flair. This will give your guests an idyllic festive welcome.

Wreaths can also be hung indoors to bring a cosy feel into your home at Christmas.

6. Light it up!

Use colourful Christmas lights to outline your house, focusing on architectural features and empty spaces.

Consider using unique decorations and lights. For example, our Champagne Gold Reindeer for indoors and our Shooting Star Scene Rope Light for outdoor décor

Your neighbours wont be able to resist looking!

7. Impress the Neighbours

Create the perfect festive scene with light-up decorations, such as flashing silhouette lights to make your home impossible to miss.

From our Flying Reindeer & Sleigh Light to our LED Santa & Star Light, we have the everything you need to create a winter wonderland.

Santa definitely won’t be missing your house this year!

8. Shine from the Inside

Add that little bit more with window displays and decorate with holiday scenes, stars, and snowflake window lights. You could also place LED flameless candles on windowsills to give your home a warm, cosy glow.

Don't forget to place your beautifully lit up Christmas tree near a prominent window for passers-by to enjoy. Your home will look so inviting!

9. Lead the (Path)Way

Line your driveway with stunning path lights and outdoor decorations. Consider using Mini Christmas Tree or Candy Cane Path Lights to create the most magical festive entryway. Or a Santa Stop Here Light to guide Santa right to your front door.
